In Australia we spend an average 3.3 years in our jobs. In fundraising, staff turnover is even higher. So when someone flourishes in their role for almost 18 years it pays to ask about the secrets to their longevity. F&P’s Fiona Atkinson caught up with Lesley to talk about her long and successful career.

Every week Lesley Ray heads to a construction site to take photos of demolition and building works. She sends the photos to donors with a chatty line such as, “Nothing like a pile of rubble and a great big crane to show that we're well and truly on the way there! You have enabled this - thank you so much for your wonderful support.” 

It takes the Director of Philanthropy at the Mater Foundation a couple of hours to do this but it’s worth its weight in gold. Because soon, what is currently a building site will become a haven for women experiencing…
