The Bread & Butter effect

The Bread & Butter Project received the 2021 Hilton Effect Grant on behalf of the Hilton Effect Foundation. The grant was awarded to organisations who have gone above and beyond to support those disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. The Bread & Butter Project was recognised for their work in creating sustainable solutions that assist those seeking refuge and asylum in Australia.

The Bread & Butter Project provides training and employment pathways in Australia’s baking industry for people seeking refuge and asylum.

The Smith Family celebrates centenary

The nation’s largest children’s education charity, The Smith Family, has been improving the lives of young Australians in need for 100 years. 

On Christmas Eve 1922, five businessmen gave gifts to children at a Sydney orphanage. When the matron of the home asked the men who the boys should thank, they each said ‘Smith’ in the spirit of anonymity. And that’s where the name of the charity comes from.

The Smith Family now supports tens of thousands of children and young people each year through its education support programs.

Australia’s leading workplace giving organisations merge

Australia’s two largest workplace giving not-for-profit organisations, Good2Give (G2G) and Workplace Giving Australia (WGA), have joined forces with the intention of transforming Australia and New Zealand’s giving landscape by attracting millions of additional donors to workplace giving.

There are almost 16 million people employed across Australia and New Zealand, and approximately 221,000 giving through work. Over $80 million has been raised per annum from workplace donors and, since 2001, Good2Give has delivered $275 million to the charitable sector in Australia. 

The merged entity will focus on reshaping the sector by enabling technology solutions, creating awareness of workplace giving, and motivating the leaders of corporate Australia to get involved with how they engage with donors.

David Mann will be the CEO of the new entity. David joins the sector with an extensive background in strategy, operations, and technology. Most recently, David was the Managing Director for the Mergers & Acquisition practice of Accenture in APAC, the Middle East and Africa.

“Given that less than 2% of working Australians are currently participating in workplace giving, our initial goal as
a combined organisation is to dramatically increase the number of Australians participating from just over 210,000 today to 1 million in the near term, and with a clear runway to achieving 3 or even 4 million donors,” said Mann.

Charitable giving in Australia is bouncing back. While the annual drop in donations due to COVID-19 were at 3% and 4% in 2020 and 2021 (equating to an income loss of almost $1 billion per year), the recovery, which began in December 2020, should see giving levels exceed pre-pandemic records.

It’s not too late to change the way you give to charity
