Meet Gopher the Chatbot

Oxfam found a media channel that delivered three times as many volunteer registrations as their telesales team, at a quarter of the cost. It was an AI chatbot created by RunGopher, which allowed users to automate personalised, natural language conversations.

"SMS is convenient and easy to respond to, and everyone checks their messages," says RunGopher Managing Director, Brendan Scott. He sees the Gopher (as the chatbot is nicknamed) as the way to automate and simplify SMS marketing without losing the personalisation of 'real-person' engagement.

Indeed, when it came time to re-activate former volunteers and acquire new volunteers for Oxfam’s annual Trailwalker event, they again used RunGopher. Some 600 people agreed to volunteer again – costing Oxfam only $3.27 per volunteer for 7-8 hour shifts. The Gopher then asked current volunteers to invite their friends to volunteer as well. Around 85 volunteers agreed and on average brought in four friends each.
