Why is fundraising still the only profession one can join without needing to know anything?

Why is it that we’re prepared to accept and promote individuals who never took the trouble to immerse themselves in the body of knowledge and properly prepare themselves for their future career?

Why is that ‘lack of knowledge’ still deemed to be superior to ‘qualification’?

After all, we would never dream of appointing an unqualified accountant or lawyer, or placing ourselves in the care of an unqualified doctor or nurse.

Even the so-called ‘trades’ now have a formal qualification framework to protect the public and attest to a base level of skill. And with good reason. How many of us would consider commissioning an unqualified plumber or electrician to undertake vital repair work in our home?

So why is it deemed acceptable for potential fundraisers to walk through the door and straight into employment?

Is fundraising where marketing was 30 years ago?
