Mark Phillips on the longer-term impact of COVID-19 on giving in Australia and the five things charities should do now

Back at the start of the pandemic, the UK’s Bluefrog Fundraising launched a series of in-depth studies to uncover how COVID-19 — and the response to it — was influencing giving behaviour. With hundreds of interviews undertaken, this is the largest study we have ever run.

We have freely shared what we learned along with our recommendations for fundraisers, to help them navigate the new environment. But throughout this time, I’ve been acutely aware that our experience in the UK was not necessarily representative of what was happening in other countries, such as Australia. 

So, at the start of 2022, we decided to run a new study with Australian donors to get an understanding of their perspective. This study is qualitative in nature. This means that we held one-to-one, in-depth conversations with donors about what matters to them, how they feel charities treat them and what influences their giving.
