HOW HAVE BEQUESTS PERFORMED OVER THE PAST 12 MONTHS?
There is no doubt bequests are getting more attention, more publicity and are a growing priority for many NFPs. There is still a dramatic under-investment in resources dedicated to gift-in-wills programs, in what is such a significant part of existing and potential undraising income for organisations.
There seems to be a lot of activity in direct mail and phone for bequests, which has its place for lead generation. However, the strategy and ability to properly manage relationships beyond that stage, for many, is not as well thought out and adequately resourced. I’m concerned that for many it is a numbers game and the primary focus is to get as many confirmed bequestors as possible, not realising that this is only a number and there is a need to steward those relationships at an acceptable level to actually see the bequests come to fruition.
